Review: The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus

imaginarium_of_doctor_parnassusDr Parnassus, the film with all the hype and surrounding hyperbole due to Heath Ledgers death mid filming, also sees Gilliam return to directing after a bit of a break. As always, we get a visual feast, but what about the rest of the elements?

Synopsis: The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is a fantastical morality tale, set in the present day. It tells the story of Dr Parnassus and his extraordinary ‘Imaginarium’, a travelling show where members of the audience get an irresistible opportunity to choose between light and joy or darkness and gloom. Blessed with the extraordinary gift of guiding the imaginations of others, Dr Parnassus is cursed with a dark secret. Long ago he made a bet with the devil, Mr Nick, in which he won immortality. Many centuries later, on meeting his one true love, Dr Parnassus made another deal with the devil, trading his immortality for youth, on condition that when his first-born reached its 16th birthday he or she would become the property of Mr Nick. Valentina is now rapidly approaching this ‘coming of age’ milestone and Dr Parnassus is desperate to protect her from her impending fate. Mr Nick arrives to collect but, always keen to make a bet, renegotiates the wager. Now the winner of Valentina will be determined by whoever seduces the first five souls. Enlisting a series of wild, comical and compelling characters in his journey, Dr Parnassus promises his daughter’s hand in marriage to the man that helps him win. In this captivating, explosive and wonderfully imaginative race against time, Dr Parnassus must fight to save his daughter in a never-ending landscape of surreal obstacles – and undo the mistakes of his past once and for all…

BBC Interactive: The Well

I’ve not had the chance to actually have a go and watch the episodes and play the game yet, but The Well looks quite interesting.  The BBC state that goes with the series:

“The Well is an eight-week drama event, created by Melvin Burgess – the godfather of young adult fiction – that plays across multiple platforms including online, social networks and TV. The story is launched first online (social networks), and simultaneously on BBC TWO (TV) and bbc.co.uk/thewell (online), where the audience can explore a scale replica of the main location for The Well – the derelict house where the well is discovered.

Between TV episodes the audience can enter the house to explore the environment, and by completing a series of tasks and challenges (13 x flash games), they can unlock hidden drama content: revealing the terrifying backstory to the drama and getting one step ahead of our characters. As the story develops, the drama f lows between the TV episodes (4 x 10 minutes) and the 3D immer sive game (3 x 20 minute levels); when a character hides an item within the house on TV, the audience can immediately go online, solve a puzzle, and uncover the item from its hiding place.

The story has been woven across these multiple platforms, and the more the audience engages with the story (on TV, online and on social networks) the more they can deepen their experience of the drama and our characters.”

Review: Up

Up Movie Poster

Another year and another new film from Pixar. Can they keep up their phenominal record of fantastic films with this buddy flick between an elderly explorer and a young boy scout.

Official Synopsis: Up is described as a “comedic adventure” starring a 78-year man named Carl Fredricksen, who’s “spent his entire life dreaming of exploring the globe and experiencing life to its fullest”. Due to his age, he thinks life has “passed him by”. One day, however, a “twist of fate”, and an 8-year old “Wilderness Explorer” named Russell, changes his outlook on life. The pair go on adventures, encountering “wild terrain”, “unexpected villains” and “jungle creatures”.

Review: Mark Macready & The Archangel Murders

Poster Artwork

Poster Artwork

Synopsis: Manchester, the supernatural crime hub of the 21st century. Home of Detective Mark ‘Mac’ Macready. When Macready wakes from a coma he was brutally put into by an unseen enemy, he is met with the unsettling news that his wife Christina is missing and a mass murdering monster has been on the rampage, which the press has affectionately dubbed ‘The Archangel’.

Realising there is a connection between his wife’s disappearance and the arrival of ‘The Archangel’ the intrepid detective descends into a paranoid, frenzied search through Manchester’s dark supernatural underbelly. It is up to Mac, and Mac alone, to find his missing wife, solve the case and bring the merciless Archangel to cold blooded justice.

Directed by Sean Candon and starring Ryan McDermott, ‘Mark Macready and the Archangel Murders’ is an independent low budget horror comedy from award winning Manchester based studio CM Films. Filled with numerous memorable characters and with twists coming thick and fast, ‘Mark Macready and the Archangel Murders’ is a thirty minute thrill ride that will have you gasping for breath and asking for more.

Review: The guys behind Mark Macready have managed to create something quite special. On a shoestring budget (£5000 I believe) they’ve managed to create an iconic hit that has become a hit in England across film festivals and the indie circuit. The films has been likened to a British Hellboy, which I’d agree with. Mixing the right amounts of horror, a bit of gore, some monsters and a bag of cheesy, OTT British humour you’ve got a film that keeps you entertained thoroughly throughout its runtime.

Acting wise the film is pretty good for a short. Paul Newbery gives a good performance in his role as Doyle and Nathan Head plays one character in two roles (trying not to give too much away here) with differing performances to seperate out the two different roles. Other cast members are all good and there is a decent chemistry between the majority of the cast. Stealing the show though is Ryan McDermott with a wonderfully OTT Macready.

Most impressive though is the production. Direction and cinematography is really very good indeed. The colour casting in parts of the film (the first 5 or so minutes in particular) work very well and were good editing choices. There is some minor fx work and monster work, all of which is was excellent for the budget involved. Biggest mention must go to the score by Scott Benzie which is exceptionally good and really pulls you into the film.

Overall then, Mark Macready and the Archangel Murders is a perfect slice of low budget, lovingly produced British horror comedy. These guys should go far and the way the film seems to be going on the circuit, I hope they get their chance. Hopefully we’ll see more of Mark Macready in the future.
